Sydney, 7 December 2023 – The Fiji Consulate General and Trade Commission organised a business networking reception event at Fullerton Hotel on 7 December 2023. The event was held in honour of The Honourable Professor Biman Prasad, Deputy Prime Minister of Fiji and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development & Statistics, along with his esteemed delegation, including His Excellency Ajay Bhai Amrit, Fiji High Commissioner to Australia, and Mr Shiri Gounder, Permanent Secretary, Fiji Ministry of Finance.
The gathering brought together members of the business community, Fijian diaspora and distinguished guests from the Australia Fiji and NSW-Fiji Business Councils.
Reflecting on the past 12 months, the event highlighted the remarkable progress in the Fiji-Australia relationship, marked by a renewed and revitalised Vuvale bilateral partnership. The presence of high-level dignitaries, including the Honourable Deputy Prime Minister, underscores the significance of the relationship and the potential for enhanced trade and investment ties.
Throughout the year, key visits from the Honourable Prime Minister and now from all three Deputy Prime Ministers underscored the commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
The Deputy Prime Minister has also conducted a series of roadshow events across Australia and New Zealand to promote Fiji’s Government’s first affordable housing public-private partnership, aiming to provide over 3000 affordable, green, and climate-resilient units.
The private sector’s role in driving economic growth and deepening economic relationships was underscored at the event. The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the Fijian diaspora’s immense contribution through direct investment into Fiji and remittances, exceeding $1 billion and remaining one of Fiji’s largest foreign exchange-earners.
Recognising the importance of the Fijian diaspora, the Government has already taken steps to remove immigration and investment barriers for former citizens, encouraging them to bring their skills, knowledge, and expertise back home. The Fiji Consulate General and Trade Commission invites and encourages the Fijian diaspora to play an active role in building a better Fiji, emphasising the collaborative efforts needed for a prosperous future.
